" The death occurred early Monday norning of Mr William HOUGHAM, second son of Mr and Mrs T.Hougham,of High St.Ash. at Preston Hall, at the age of 52 years.Deceased had been there about two years. He had served 18 years in the Royal Navy having attained the rank of Chief Petty officer.but was eventually invalided out of the service as the result of an accident. He returned to his native village, but unfortunately consumption developed, though he struggled on bravely, and most cheerfully in spite of his affliction. The local branch of the British Legion took up the case, and he was admitted to Preston Hall, where his wife and family eventually followed him. At his request he was engaged on the electric lighting plant, afterwads learning carpentry, and finally he undertook the duties of night attendant untill a week before his death,"
"The funeral took place at the Parish church on Saturday afternoon at Ash. A strong muster of the members of the Woodnesborough and Ash branch of the British legion, wearing Flander's poppies which were deposited on the coffin. Six members of the Legion acted as Pall bearers, the remainder falling in behind the cortege, and was met at the Church gates by Rev.O.H.May, assistant Priest of Ash and Westnarsh." The principal mourners were;-
Mrs Hougham (widow) Mr W Hougham (Son) Miss E, and Miss M.Hougham (daughters) Mr T.Hougham (Father) Mrs Butcher (sister) Mr and Mrs A.Bicker (sister and brother in law) Mr and Mrs G Hougham & Mrs J.Hougham(brothers and their wives Mr C.Hougham (bro) Mrs Gore (Mother in law) Mr & Mrs G.Godfrey & Mr & Mrs F.Fairhlll (Bros.& Sis in law) Mrs Nichols (aunt) Mr J.Hougham (uncle)" --Many friends were named. The coffin was covered with the Union Jack. Mr J.Martin of Aylesford was Undertaker. At the conclusion of the service the 'Last Post' was sounded, a regretable incident-the members of "Ye Olde Aylesford Lodge 3727 "and" the King and Queen Lodge of East Malling-after a breakdown, walked arriving fifteen minutes after the conclusion of the service-but the Officers and members filed past the grave,in full regalia, depositing the customary ivy leaf on the coffin of the departed brother."
