Extracts from a letter received from the GUILTON RECTORY,Ash-next-Sandwioh.22 March 1927.relating to the family of
Houghams to which Mercy Jane (Hougham) Bicker belongs. (Note;-she is a third cousin of my Mother.)
The family of Hougham is a very ancient one and its existence can be traced by charters and registers from the 13th century, they were evidently very important people of that period. They derive their name from a Manor called Hougham, near Dover, but THIS corner of Kent seems to have been the home of the family. The name of Hougham or Huffam,as it was spelt in very early times,Is to be found in the Registers of Ash from 1558,to the present day. In other Parish Registers the name figures, such as ,Wingham,Tenterden, and Preston, and Elmstone about two miles from Ash." " Weddington, mentioned in ancient history as"the old seat of the Houghams"is not a Parish,it is a small district of
the large parish of Ash.The Manor house no longer exists, and the land has been-for a couple of centuries prob-ably-owned by various families.Weddington now(l927) consists of a house known as Great Weddington,a good farm, surrounded by excellent land, well adapted to the culture of corn, fruit and hops,a smaller house with some acres of fruit plantation adjoins it.and is called Little Weddington, and further along the road toward the Marshes, is Lower Weddington.-with more fruit plantation. Weddington is a pretty little spot especially in May." Now in 1927 the Hougham family has in no way died out,in this Parish, there are many tiny children to carry it on to
future generations. The members are no longer land owners and grand-folk,but steady honest workers earning their daily bread in useful,if humble occupations, and duly respected in their various callings;some work on the land some in shops, one father and son keep up their trade as thatchers-the ONLY REALLY GOOD THATCHERS IN THE VILLAGE." "There is in the Church-yard an old fashioned tomb, with big square" block of masonry by way of monument,to the Memory of Houghams some 25 years ago the iron railings round it were so broken and untidy that the Church-wardens, (with the permission of a member of the Hougham family)had them removed, but the block remains.I visited it to lay in the hope of gaining some information which might interest you,but the inscription is quite worn away, and the whole covered with grey and yellow lichens."
( The Vicar of Ash was at this time Rev.C.H.Barton.,of the Vicarage.)
,NOTE,by M.H.Pratt,In 1937 I visited the Parish Church at Ash,and itTs wonderful Churohyard-the graves were many, and many of then were shaped like a mummy on a casket, and over the whole cemetry the graves were covered with long green moss which looked like mantles spread all over-then the churchyard was in full bloom with golden daffodils everywhere knee deep, and it was a beautiful sight-it was Easter time.
