My cousin in S.Africa married a Dutch woman and has 3 daughters and a son George. His father died at about 37.-after his father's death he was put under the care of a titled lady, and was put under the care of a leading London Architect for some years, eventually became one himself, and took up a Govt.appointment as such in South Africa.

Assistant engineer Public Works Dept Cape Colony

Extracts from letters of Charles Hougham,of"Craig View",Beach Road ,Mouille Point,nr Capetown.South Africa.

1929.Mar.20-(-Charles was born in Kent, and is a third cousin to my Mother.) "The forms you transmitted are
filled in to the best of my ability, and returned herewith. Also I convey a tracing of a genealogical tree of the Houghams who are my ancestors.I am under the impression that Hougham is a purely Anglo Saxon name
-a combination of hough-a low hill or rise, and ham-a village ,town or estate ,manor etc'.-thus we arrive at Hougham, Out here ,up in the native territory, there used to be a magistrate with a hyphen name,Hudson-Hougham.I used to look out for him when I happened to be trekking in his district, but unfortunately he was always on circuit when I came around, consequently I never ascertained how the hyphen came about. That is many years ago,he has now passed on.Not long since I was astonished and annoyed when reading an account of a Jewish function up country somewhere, that the blighter of a yid had named his daughter Rachel Hougham Abraham's,-ye Gods'.I wonder where he dug up the name and I gasp when I imagine a sheeny trying to pronounce It. When perusing the tracing sent herewith,it should be remembered that a"Mayor and a"Sherriff were vastly more important personages in those days than they are at present.Sandwich, of which Solomon Hougham was Mayor was one of the Cinque ports-then a most important place—and now it is a small town, quite inland, the sea having receded.""I am sending arms and crest, with detail of reading, meaning and coloring,it will be observed that the quartering of the escutcheon embodying the arms of Brooke family occured when Stephen Hougham married Bermetta Brooke."
When making the tracing, and arriving at"Charles Hougham "my namesake, it gave me quite an eerie feeling. Over 300 years ago he was a being like myself -and now-? Anyway I wonder what sort of a chap the old fellow was.My son George sailed from here last Sept and it will be another 18 months before we shall see him again "

1929.Oct.6."lately Fanny Hougham wrote to me from Deal ,Kent,England.she sent me the death notice of one ,William H Hougham-I send it to you.Everybody calls my daughter Molly "Pixie".Although an Englishman I love Africa and would not exchange my land of residence were my endowments increased ever so.—My wife's Mother was a Miss Pike, she with some of my wife's brothers and sisters now live in Longbeaoh,California."

In 1929 Charles Hougham moved. to "St Croix" Main Road,Green Point,Capa Town.-Note by M.H.Pratt-I had many letters over the months from Charles but nothing historical or genealoglcal-so nothing to record here.

l93l.May 3l."To be candid cousin, what interests me but little is the pedigree business.I admit that were there any 'mercenary advantage to be derived,I would not mind having descended from one of King "Charles" loose women, so many of the aristocracy are proud of this heritage to-day,but personally I consider it something to be ashamed of but in my estimation a man should be appraised for what he is without any reference to the old blighters from whom he has descended-the foregoing is somewhat involved, but there it is. My wife and two of my daughters are Roman Catholics, the other daughter I term a Christian, the son is Church of England.and I,well every Sunday evening I attend the English service in the Dutch Reformed Church-practically Presbyterian formula—I read my bible and say my prayers religiously, and endeavour to lead a clean straight life-but of what denomination I am is a puzzle.Speaking of my son, at the beginning of March last he passed his board of trade examination and obtained his mate's certificate. At present he is staying with his Aunt(MY SISTER MRS FRANCIS) of Chester,he is close to Liverpool ,he has been away three years and his Mother is pining to see him."

1931 Nov.5th."My Christmas compliments and may Christ's birthday be a very happy one for you and yours"

NOTE by M.H.Pratt,I have tried to explain my interest in genealogy from the viewpoint of revealed gospel in the latter days-and seeing that I do not get genealogical letters,I am writing a few extracts that show the character of my kin Charles Hougham. he says;-

"I can honestly aver that in so far as I am concerned I find no fault with any man, whatever his creed,so long as he acknowledges Jesus Christ as his Lord, and serves him accordingly in his every day life, and his every hour action.Personally I look upon baptism as purely a symbol whether it be in the form of emersion, effusion,or sprinkling. To me Christ is too full of love and mercy to turn down any poor beggar who has striven to lead a clean straight life. Whatever form baptism may have been administered,or even if ha has not been baptised at all, infinite love is my conception Of Jesus, and Almighty God."

Address now Flat No 2. 88 High level Road .Green Point.

Oct.1932."A descendant of William Hougham was named Stephen Hougham who married Bennetta Brooke, after the death of her nephew John Brooke only heir of the family-here we link up with the Brooke family-this occured about 1550.Then we come down to 1624 when Barton is mentioned-we find that Solomon( jew?) Hougham b.1624,Merchant of London .Sheriff of Kent, l696-ob. 1697, was of Barton near Canterbury-He had no issue, His brother Edward carried on the line,AND WE DESCEND TO WILLIAM HOUGHAM OF BARTON COURT ob.1828. There my information ceases.—My sister married Hugh Francis of CHESTER,CHESHIRE."

"! am sorry that circumstances prevented your proposed visit to Kent-you would have undoubtedly gathered a good, deal of information to aid you in the compilation of your records; at the same time I fear that your investigations would not have enhanced any good opinion, you may possess' regarding the Hougham family..I think that I have mentioned befor that I do not swank about my lineage."
My eldest daughter is in Johannesburg, the youngest is in Port Elizabeth, the middle one is married and lives
in Capetown, and my son is on the S.S Princessa" ,trading between Liverpool and South America. We have not seen him for four years.Just think I was 68 last month."

1933.Nov,20."York Hotel" My daughter plans to make me a Grand-daddy in April."

1934.Nov.2l."Since we last corresponded I have become a Grandfather-has an ancient sound-makes me feel I ought to substitute a walking cane for golf sticks. It is a little girl."

      1935.Nov. ?4."Albemarle" 147 Beach Road,Three Anchor Bay .Cape'Town. "A fortnight ago ,Molly-our only married daughter increased my Grand-father-hood by producing a son.

1937.Comes a letter from Charle's wife.-May Hougham. She tells me of Charle's illness and death on the 5th of October 1937.-She asks for our genealogy.

1938.Dec.2.May Hougham wrote again. Molly, the second daughter has two babies,Doreen May Dorothea who- is four yrs and 7 months, and Charlie Frederick William who is turned 3 Years 14 months ,Dolly, the eldest has adopted a little boy Peter, he was 7 months on the 2nd of Nov. ,a lovely child. Noela ,the youngest is not married yet, she will be 28 years' on Xmas day.and George ,the son is 29 ,he is carried, but have no children yet."

1939.july 18."I am getting on 52 of age this month.Dolly and Terrance just love little Peter."

This, is my last letter to 1946-war and other things, and we have lost track of each other. But one can see how that one item at a time, over many years has been the way I build my records.M.H.P.

Charles said " Just where my predeccessors link up with William Hougham of Barton Court who died 1828 is beyond my knowledge", - then see above - "Solomon Sherriff had no issue" - "His brother Edward carried on the line" etc

      Note By MHP.

This last statement is incorrect - Edward was twin brother with Ann, she is mentioned in Will of Solomon,Edward is not, he apparrently died young. Solomon died 1697, his brother Henry had da. in 1694 in the terms of the will Henry's oldest son Solomon was next in line and for a short time he inherited but he could not retain or pass it on because he had only 3 daughters and no sons. The will stated very definately "Male heirs to the 7th generation both accross and down - so the younger brother of Solomon (son of Henry) inherited, his name was Charles who at this time had a son Charles and a Grandson Charles.

      Note by RJY (Mar 2004)

The reference Hudson-Hougham is incorrect, it is actually Hougham Hudson. I have extensive information about him and his descendants and although he was born in Kent I have not yet been able to ascertain his exact connection with the Hougham family. The Houghams and Hudsons have intermarried on several occassions and no doubt the connection is there ,but what is it?
