On 1891 census as domestic servant of the Cox family at 7a Grove terrace Deal. nursemaid.

on 1901 census as visitor 18 Streatfield street Limehouse?
On 1901 census as domestic servant cook at Thanet College Margate?

In 1901 Florence Rose waas employed as a live in domestic servant (cook) at Thanet College Margate with a total of 53 students aged between 6 - 19 . A domestic staff of 9 and a teaching staff of 6. This college was later to be badly damaged by enemy action on June 1st 1943. A tip and run raid was made by 12 FW190s fighter bombers of the 11/skg10 unit. Amongst the buildings hit on that day were the Astoria Cinema, Margate College and Trinity Church. The clock of which stopped at 1.07 PM. By strange co-incidence the bombing raid was witnessed by her grandson David, a month short of his 7th birthday who was playing at the time, in the back garden of his home in Garlinge a distance of some 4 miles away from the action. - David Clark

Possibly married a Mr Lincoln in 1919

      cannot find in 1911 census

      Hi Robin,

My brother-in-law has been investigating his 'Dilnot' family tree and in doing so he unearthed a 'Hougham' record in the St Johns Church parish records in Margate.

      Florence Rose Hougham b 12-03-1898
      Parents Edwin Henry & Caroline
He was a gas fitter at Thanet College Margate

I can't find a match in our family tree. There is an Edwin Henry (b 1845 in Ramsgate. d 1923 at Eastry) who was wed to a Caroline Kemp. He lived variously in Deal and Walmer and the 1891 census records him as a Gas Fitter in Deal. They had a daughter Florence (b 1879 in Deal, d 1922) but there is no second name Rose recorded there.

Separately recorded is a Florence Rose born in Eastry in 1878 but not connected with any other part of the family so it does look like there might be something adrift.

I thought you would be interested in this.

      Hi Mike,

Thanks for presenting this little poser, I’m not sure we will ever get to the bottom of it but I have a couple of thoughts. Lets look first at the memorial, if the mother is Caroline Kemp and I think she must be, that would make her 47 at Florence’s birth, not impossible but unlikely. Then we must question why Edwin and Caroline would use the name Florence for a second time, we know that there was a child Florence in this family at the 1881 census.

I would like to know more about the origination of the memorial, If there were a Florence born in 1898, where is she in the 1901 and 1911 census? So for my money. somebody somewhere has recorded the date incorrectly, don’t forget the date in my tree for Florences birth of 1879 has been worked back from the census so could well really be 1878, and the 7 could have been mistaken for a 9.

So lets follow Florence born 1878/9 on the census. In 1881 she is at home, in 1891 she is a domestic servant in Grove Terrace Deal, in 1901 she is a cook at the Thanet College Margate and she cannot be found on the 1911 census, perhaps she was married by then.

So who then is Florence Rose? She can only be found on the 1901 census, where she is a visitor to an address in Limehouse, her occupation is a cook and her birthplace is Walmer, and her age fits with 1878/9. If it were not for the Thanet College return we would have said she was the daughter of Edwin and Caroline.

What do we know of the College? It appears to be residential as the birthplace of some of the students indicate it must be. The census is required to record the names of everyone in the establishment on the evening of a particular day but perhaps the person filling in the return got lazy and rather than check who was where on the evening, just went through the list of staff and students and listed everyone regardless.

My theory, and it is only a theory is that we have two mistakes, one on the memorial and one made by the college, otherwise I would have said that Florence and Florence Rose are one and the same person.

      Does this help?

      Dear Robin. 14th March 2018.
I thought that I would drop you a line, to throw some light on the mystery of whatever happened to Florence Rose. Now in my eightieth year and one of five cousins, three of which, are the grandchildren of Florence Rose, myself included. Florence Rose (Hougham) was born on March 12th 1878, in Eastry Kent, the child of Edwin Henry Hougham (1845-1923) and Carloline Kemp (1849-1937). She married Joseph Cyrus Clark in 1903 in Eastry, Kent. they had three children during their marriage, Leslie Stuart Hougham Clark born 18th of March 1904, Florence Maud Clark born 11th of December 1910 and Victor Stanley Walter Clark born 24th of September 1906, the latter being my father. She died in September 1921 in Margate Kent, at the age of 43.

All the above, and more, is documented and stored on "Ancestry" under the Clark Family Tree, which I would be delighted to share with you, I am not sure, or even that adept, to know, if you are able to access this site from your end, but if your efforts are to no avail, I would be happy to photocopy all the relevant documentation and post it to an accommodation address of your choice. It might also interest you to know that I can provide in addition, photographic portraits of Florence and her husband Joseph, and a group photograph of themselves with their three offspring. Also of interest to you, I can provide a copy of an air-mail letter sent from the United States by Marion Pratt, dated 16th February 1959 and addressed to a Mr W D Hougham, in which she is trying to make contact with the Hougham clan after her researches, with a view of providing copies of her the newly published book. Also of interest are extracts from the Register of Burials in the Burial Ground, Deal Cemetery, 1856-1948, pertaining to the Hougham family, and extracts from the Deal Walmer & Sandwich Telegram & Mercury, concerning marriage, baptisms, birth and deaths regarding the Hougham family, all of which was gathered by a family researcher by the name of Harold, of which I have very little information, apart from an indirect mention of his research activities, in a family letter dated May 5th 1983.

I hope the above information will be of interest to you, even though it represents the termination of one part of the Hougham tree, but I felt, that if I did not make the effort, what ever happened to Florence Rose, might forever remain a mystery. Sadly I never met the lady, she having passed away some sixteen years before my birth, I can however just about remember my grandfather Joseph who was by profession a baker and pastrycook, and his kindness toward me, when he was preparing the mixture for a cake for a family occasion. Thinking the rich brown mixture was garden soil, and trying to help, I gathered some from the garden, and added it to the mixture, but instead of shouting at me, he gave me a little hug and a bun, such kindness as you can tell, has stayed with me to this very day.

So that we don't lose touch, I will leave you with my home address and telephone number should you wish to contact me that way... Top Flat, 37 Rotherslade Road, Langland, Swansea, SA3 4QW. 01792 361518.

      My regards and best wishes.
