General Notes: According to Bruce Bayer, Willoughby was a wealthy man. He had been an
architect in the employ of the "House of England", meaning the royal family and was involved in
work done on at least one castle.
In teh 1861 census, Willoughby and Louisa have living with them Elizabeth Huffam age 44 and
Seymour Huffam age 5. Clearly they are relatives of Louisa, possibly a sister or sister-in-law
and nephew. It was noted that Elizabeth was a visitor and an accountants wife. Also living in the
household are Eliza Seymour, age 46 and Mary Ann Spencer age 25. They are listed as
servants but may also have been relatives since the names Seymour and Spencer are included
in the names of Willoughby's siblings as first or middle names.
In the 1881 British census, Willoughby is listed as a retired architect age 59. Living with him
were his daughter Theodora and Willoughby , Jr. His second wife Emily was not in the
household. Her maiden name is unknown but she was about 20 years younger than
Willoughby. Since Louisa had died in 1878 and this second marriage occurred in 1889, doubt
must be cast on the story told in the Bayer family regarding the second wife forcing the sons
John H. and Willoughby, Jr. into indentured servitude on board a ship because she did not want
to deal with children. Unless that is, there was a wife in between Louisa and Emily.
In the 1901 British census, one year prior to his death, Willoughby lists his wife as Emily A.
Mullins. At the time he was 77 and she was 56 per the census record.
Picure included of the narthex of Holy Savior Church built in Croydon based on Willoughby's
      architectural design.
No training information is listed in the direstory of architects as it is with his father and I suspect
he probably obtained his training from his father.
