    Notes
    • See Canterbury Marriage Licences. 1643 Feb 7 Richard FILMER of Wychling, husb, ba about 30 and Dennes PACKENHAM sp about like age whose parents are dead. At Wychling or Otterden. Thomas FILMER of Wychling yeom and Henry SKERE bricklayer of
      Doddington bonds.

      Joan was his only child

Richard, was baptised at Wichling in 1613. He married Dennes Packman, (the sister of his brother Robert's wife, Mary Packman), in 1643 . She had, like her sister, been brought up in the Filmer family household. The Licence states that both were about thirty, that her parents were dead, and that Thomas Filmer of Wichling, yeoman, and Henry Skere, bricklayer, of Doddington put up bonds.

They had an only child, Joan, baptised in 1645 at Wichling. It looks as if she married Thomas Jeffery, of Tunstall, at St. Margaret's, Canterbury, in 1676. The Licence states that Henry Filmer of Doddington, yeoman, stood bond. Henry was Joan's uncle and the logical person to do this.

Richard was buried on 21st December, 1662 at Wichling. His will, dated 13th December, 1662 - again executed very close to death - left half his moveables to his wife, Dennes, and half to his daughter, Joan. John Filmer of Wichling, his brother, was executor (Arch. C. C. A 71 417).

WILL of JAMES FILMER, of Newenden, Kent, Husbandman

      Dated Died 13/9/1657 Proved 24/6/1658

      'Wife DOROTHY, executrix.
Witnesses. JEFFERY SKEERE, RICHARD FILMER and JOHN HOLENDER (? HERENDEN or HOLINDEN)'.
      Ref. Canterbury Will. 1657 - 1660. 282 Woolton.

JAMES, the son of WILLIAM FILMER and BETHULIA ELLETT, died on the 13th September, 1657 being buried at Wichling. The will mentions his wife, DOROTHY, whom he made executrix and was witnessed by JWFFERY SKEER, RICHARD FILMER and JOHN HERENDEN. The will was proved on the 24th June, 1658 (Ref: 252 Woolton).

It looks certain that DOROTHY was the sister of THOMASINE SKEER and JOAN SKEER. The latter married THOMAS FILMER, her uncle. She had a brother, JEFFERY, who witnessed JAMES's will. DOROTHY, herself, seems to have married first, AYLEMER HERENDEN and it was only after his death that she married JAMES FILMER. She had two children by AYLEMER HERENDEN - namely AMOR and JOHN. It seems to have been this last person, JOHN HERENDEN, who also witnessed JAMES's will.

It is known that he held four pieces of land amounting to some twenty acres, which were then known locally as: Stock; Great Brooms; Middlefield; and Homepix. It was stated on proving the will that both Richard and his brother, John, were yeomen.

An inventory (ACC A 71 417) was taken in January 1663 by Henry Filmer, William Filmer and Robert Packman:
