WILL of ANN FILMER, of Bredgar, widow

      Dated 30/11/1727 Proved 4/1/1728

ANN (the widow of WILLIAM FILMER, who died in Bredgar in 1725) died at Bredgar in 1728. She left a will:

'I, ANN FILMER, of Bredgar, this 30th day of Nov. 1727 do make this my last will. I desire my body to be devoutly interred in the churchyard of Bredgar, near my dear and loving husband.
To my youngest son, WILLIAM, all my ready money and _ by mortgage, or land at the time of my decease, _ upon any other amount, except the sums hereinafter named, provided the said WILLIAM shall at the time of my decease have reached the age of 23 years and in particular I bequeath him £100 due on a mortgage and £60 put out upon sureties of different kinds. I bequeath him all my household goods, linen, pewter and wedding furniture whatsoever.
I do give my three daughters or the survivor of them, viz, MARY, wife of JAMES WATERER, SARAH, wife or JAMES HARRIS [probably JOHN FERRIS - see note below], and ANN, wife of WILLIAM HEAD, the sum of one guinea to be paid by my executor within 12 months after my decease. Also I bequeath to my three daughters all my wearing apparel.
I do likewise give my son THOMAS the sum of one guinea.
Also, provided WILLIAM be 23 at the time of my decease I appoint him my sole executor, but if he be not then 23, I appoint his elder brother THOMAS FILMER, ROBERT UNDERDOWN, JOHN WATERER, WILLIAM HEAD and JAMES HARRIS of Bredgar as executors in trust for the said WILLIAM FILMER until he shall attain the age of 23. If WILLIAM dies before he is 23 I appoint his elder brother if living, sole executor, and require him to pay each of his sisters £20 each, and to share equally with them my household goods. In case both my sons die, I do appoint ROBERT UNDERDOWN, JAMES WATERER, WILLIAM HEAD and JAMES HARRIS to place out £100 together with the sums that shall arrive by the decease of any of my daughters, upon good security and utilise the interest thereon for the use of my grandchildren, the sum of £100 or more; not to be divided until my youngest grandchild be 21 years of age. ANN FILMER 30th November, 1727.'
Signed. R. TYSRE, JOHN HARRIS, SARAH HARRIS, the mark of SUSANNA GROOENBRIDGE.

The will was proved by son, THOMAS, in January, 1728 (Arcd. C. C. A 87 15).

Note. Only 2 sons and 3 daughters were living in 1727. Sarah's husband's name is given as James Harris in one transcription of the will and John Harris in another. John & Sarah Harris were also witnesses. Ferris could easily have been mistaken for Harris and there is other evidence that Sarah married John Ferris. On balance it is probable the this Sarah married John Ferris and that the will was wrongly transcribed (JAMES Wateror was the husband of Mary, and was mentioned immediately before Sarah in the will), but a doubt must remain.
