  Notes	Thomas Prestedge 1839 - 1911. Thomas, the youngest son of Henry Prestedge b. 1796 and Maria, was born in 1839 in Kilsby. He married Ann Jane Hougham in the Parish Church of St. Mary, Lambeth on 23rd September 1867, the daughter of police officer Henry Hougham and his wife Martha Hougham nee Kendall. Ann born 1845 was 22 and Thomas 28 when they married. It appears that they both had some education for they each signed the register. Ann’s parents Henry and Martha were the witnesses to the marriage in the register entry. The couple’s first child, Thomas Henry, was born at Lambeth, Surrey in 1868 before the family returned to Kilsby around 1870, at about the time that Maria, the mother of Thomas, was enduring her final painful illness before her death. Whilst in London Thomas had worked as an ostler and back in Kilsby as a farm labourer. Nine more children were born to Ann and Thomas in Kilsby between 1870 and 1891. However, some time before 1896 the family had moved south-east to the Isle of Thanet in Kent where Thomas worked as a gardener. It is possible the family moved there because Ann’s father Henry Hougham had died in the December Quarter 1893. Henry’s widow Martha survived him by 16 years and was buried on 24th February 1909 at St. Lawrence in Ramsgate. At the time of her death Martha was living at 92 Percy Rd., Ramsgate. Once Thomas and the family had moved to the Isle of Thanet there were no Prestedges remaining in Kilsby. However Stephen Prestidge of nearby Barby who was a relative and originally from Moreton Pinkney, also adopted the Prestedge spelling during the 1800’s. Thomas died at his home at 80 Boundary Rd., Ramsgate at the age of 72 years and was buried on 19th October 1911 at St. Lawrence, the service conducted by C.E.P. Antrum the Minister of the Ellington Union Chapel. Two years later Thomas and Ann’s son William also died at the family home in Boundary Rd., Ramsgate. A bricklayer by trade, he was 27 years old at the time of his death and had been suffering from Nephritis for seven months. Ann survived her husband Thomas by over 30 years, dying at the Alms Houses in Ramsgate in 1945 in her 100th year having survived two world wars. She also is buried at the Church of St. Lawrence. During her long life Ann would have seen the introduction of motor cars and sealed roads, also the telephone and gramophone. She probably cast her first vote in the British General Election in 1928 as a result of Women’s Suffrage. The ten children of Thomas and Ann were:- Thomas Henry born 22nd July 1868 at 1 King St., Cornwall Road, Lambeth, Surrey. (See Chapter 19 page 67.) Alfred John born 1870, bapt., 6th April 1870 at Kilsby, Northants. As an adult Alfred migrated to South Africa with his brother Edward. It is believed that he remained unmarried. Alice Maria born 1872, bapt., 19th May 1872 at Kilsby, Northants. Married Benjamin Tarry at Ramsgate in the September Qtr., 1900, and was living at Stevenage, Hertfordshire in 1962. An unnamed female Prestedge child registered at the same time as Alice is thought to have been her stillborn twin. Edward Kendall born 23rd July 1875, bapt., 15th August 1875 at Kilsby, Northants. Married 5th November 1902 in Croyden, Surrey to Lucy Elizabeth White. Lucy born 15th May 1879 in Whittington, Norfolk, England and died 14th September 1957 in Johannesburg South Africa. Edward and Lucy migrated to South Africa soon after their marriage and Edward died there in Johannesburg on 16th July 1951. Their children were:- Ida Evelyn born 1905 Thelma Royal born 1907 Edward Kendall born 1907 Claude Arthur born 1910 Henry born 26th July 1879 in Kilsby, Northants. Nothing more is known about Henry at this time, although he does appear on the 1881 census with the family in Kilsby. Elizabeth Sarah born 1881 in Kilsby, Northants. Married in Thanet in 1904 to Ernest Edward William Goodban described as a ‘motorman’. A son Edward Ernest Goodban was baptised 26 April 1908, St. Lawrence, Ramsgate, when the Goodbans were living at 1 Sydney Rd. The family were still living in Ramsgate in 1962. Annie born 1884 in Kilsby, Northants. In the 1901 census she is shown living with her parents and aged 17. Annie became Mrs. Westlake in 1908 in Devon and was living in Pennycomequick, Plymouth, Devon in 1962. William born 1886 in Kilsby, Northants. Unmarried. Bricklayer. Died at 80 Boundary Rd., Ramsgate, and was buried on 27 September 1913 at St. Lawrence, Ramsgate. Joseph born 3rd April 1888, baptised 18th May 1888 in Kilsby, Northants, was living in Croyden, Surrey in 1962. Married on 21st December 1922 in the parish church of St. Anne’s in Wandsworth, London to Florence Elizabeth Hodges, 28, daughter of deceased butcher, George Hodges. So far no children have been found for this couple. Martha Jane born 15th August 1891 at Kilsby, Northants.. Married at the Thanet Register Office on 2nd April 1926, John Thomas High a 42 year old widower of 32 Dover Road, Ramsgate. John’s occupation is given on the marriage certificate as “Journeyman Carpenter”. Martha’s sister Elizabeth Sarah Goodban and her husband Ernest were the witnesses to the marriage.
