    Notes
    • Thomas Henry Prestedge 1868 - 1949 and
Phillis Elizabeth Prestedge nee Hougham 1872 - 1961

Thomas Henry the first child of Ann nee Hougham and Thomas Prestedge was born at 1 King St., in Lambeth Surrey on 22 July 1868.

The English policy of free general education for children was beginning to show benefits by this generation as the story of Thomas Henry shows. By the time the family moved south to Ramsgate in the Isle of Thanet sometime between 1891 and 1895, Thomas had not only completed his schooling, mainly in Kilsby, but had served an apprenticeship and was in business for himself as a plumber.

In the Thanet Register Office on 31st October 1896, at the age of 28, Thomas married his cousin Phillis Elizabeth Hougham, called Elizabeth, four years his junior. Charles Henry Hougham, Elizabeth’s father was the brother of Ann Jane Prestedge nee Hougham, mother of Thomas and now mother-in-law to Elizabeth. (See Chapter 18 page 64)

Elizabeth was about five years old when her mother Frances and her baby sister Louisa died within three months of one another in 1877. It is thought that at about this time Elizabeth was given into the care of her paternal grandparents, retired police officer Henry Hougham and his wife Martha Hougham nee Kendall, who raised her. At the 1881 census she is shown living with them in Ramsgate, although an error on the census record gives Elizabeth’s age as 17, when in fact she was only 9 years old.

Charles Henry Hougham then married Emily in Lambeth in 1878 and his household in the 1881 census included Elizabeth’s two brothers, Thomas William aged 11 and George Alexander 7 and their baby half-sister Sarah aged 1. Their elder brother, Charles Henry Hougham Jnr., having died in 1880 aged 13. Charles Hougham Snr., died in Lambeth in 1901, by which time Elizabeth would have been 29 years old.

On her marriage certificate Elizabeth gave her occupation as needlewoman, a skill she shared with her mother-in-law Ann, a mantle maker, or dressmaker. Elizabeth’s skill and dedication to her craft is demonstrated in the exquisite hand sewing on the beautiful christening gown and petticoat made for her own children’s baptisms. The gown, made of finest cotton lawn, has been handed down to succeeding generations and at the present time (2003) is being cared for by Margaret and Geoff Prestedge. One hundred years after it was so lovingly and patiently stitched it is still in perfect condition.

Thomas Henry and Elizabeth made their first home at 8 Alexandra Rd., Ramsgate and it was here that their first son Herbert Henry was born in 1898. A longed for daughter, Frances Ann, followed in 1900 but sadly died soon after birth. By the time a second son, Henry Thomas was born in 1901 the family were living at 54 Chapel Rd., St. Lawrence and Thomas was still building his business as a Master Plumber. A third son Percy Edward arrived in 1904 and their family was completed with the birth of Alfred George in 1911.

Due in part, no doubt, to his business interests Thomas began to be active in municipal affairs and was elected to the Ramsgate Town Council in 1909. Thus began a lifelong devotion to civic duties.
About 1920, when in his early fifties, in view of the economic situation and the looming depression, Thomas decided to close down his business and devoted himself to his duties on the Ramsgate and Kent County Councils. With the four boys growing up Elizabeth was able to assist him in this. Thomas was elected Mayor of Ramsgate in 1928.

On 25th October 1945, watched by proud family members, Thomas was made an Honorary Freeman of the Borough in recognition of 36 years continuous years of service to the Borough, as Councillor, Alderman and Mayor and of his service to Ramsgate on the Kent County Council. The Key and Scroll presented to him at the ceremony are now in the Ramsgate Museum.

Thomas is remembered by his grandsons as a kindly man who smoked a pipe and amused himself by playing tunes on a brass penny whistle.

Elizabeth ably supported her husband in all his endeavours and nursed him during his final illness. He died on the 25th March 1949, aged 80, from carcinoma of the liver at his home, 63 South Eastern Rd., Ramsgate. His widow lived on until she was 89, also dying in Ramsgate on 27th March 1961.

The children of Thomas and Elizabeth were:-

Herbert (Bert) Henry born 22nd July 1898 at 8, Alexandra Rd., Ramsgate. Bert married Vera Irene Ethel Mount, an orphan, in the June Qtr., 1924 in the Isle of Thanet. Vera, born at Ramsgate on 8th October 1897, was baptised at St. Lawrence in 1911 at the age of 12, whilst living at the Cottage Homes Manston. Bert and Vera both died in Ramsgate. (See Chapter 20.) They had only one child, a son, Dudley Herbert.

Frances Ann born in Ramsgate 1900. Died June Qtr., 1900 Ramsgate.

Henry (Harry) Thomas born 21st November 1901 at 54 Chapel Rd., Ramsgate. Married Helen (Nell) Knight, daughter of George and Mercy Knight of Ramsgate at Ramsgate in 1925. Harry died in Dover in 1982 (See Chapter 21.) Nell and Harry had only one child, a son, Geoffrey, born in 1929.

Percy Edward born 1904 in Ramsgate. Married Dorothy Jones at Hendon, London in 1938. Percy, a chiropodist died in 1996. Dorothy and Percy had only one child, a son, Paul, born about 1940.

Alfred (Alf) George born 1911 in Ramsgate. Married Louisa Hilda Perrett, known as Hilda, in Ramsgate in 1932. Their only child, a son, Peter George was born in 1934. After service in WW11 with the R.A.F including time in India, Alf returned to Ramsgate and subsequently applied for a position in the Accounts office of Cadbury Fry Pascall the confectionary manufacturer in Tasmania. The family migrated to Tasmania in 1950. In Tasmania Alf grew gladioli and dahlias which were exhibited in local garden competitions, with some success and was active in the local R.S.L Branch. Hilda returned to her trade of tailoress and worked for Fletcher Jones in Hobart. Alf died of cancer at Claremont, Tasmania in 1983. Hilda died at Claremont on 16th April 2005 in her 97th year.
