My Hougham ancestor is CATHERINE HOUGHAM, dau of Moses 1. She was b. 21 Mar 1803 in Hillsborough, Highland Co. OH. She married, 21 Jul 1822 in Madison Co. OH, DAVID E. ELLINGTON, b. 22 Aug 1797 in KY. DAVID E. ELLINGTON, for some years after his marriage, was engaged in farming in the Buckeye state. In 1828 the family came to McLean County, Illinois, by wagon, a distance of over 400 miles, and settled at Blooming Grove, about two miles from the present site of the city of Bloomington, whose population at that time consisted of only four families and one store. In those early times the people of this part of the state had to go to a little grist mill near Springfield to have their corn ground into corn meal.* (*KH Note: This may be from the 1881 History of McLean Co IL, ck it.) Sometime about 1830 the DAVID E ELLINGON family came to a tract of land in DeWitt County, three miles northeast of Waynesville, Illinois, which they entered from the Government, and here they reared their large family of twelve children, excepting one little child that died in infancy, and here these old pioneers remained until they were called to the Great Beyond. B. McKean's notes at the end of her D.E. Ellington file lists sources: biography of ISAAC ELLINGTON, p. 398 The Biographical Record of DeWitt County, S.J. Clarke Publishing Co, 1901; Federal Census Records; obituaries & cemetery records; and the Ellington family bible. CATHERINE and DAVID ELLINGTON'S fifth child CHRISTINA (not my direct line) was b. 4 May 1830, the second of their children born in Illinois. She m. 1850 ELIAS BROCK. Both of them died in 1909 in Heyworth, McLean Co, IL and are buried Heyworth Cem. (KH Note: Christina Ellington Brock's grandparnets and uncle, the MOSES 1 & MOSES 2 HOUGHAM families were settlers in Heyworth.) . . . My ancestor is SARAH JANE ELLINGTON, next daughter of Catherine Hougham and David Ellington. She was b. 9 Aug 1832 near Bloomington, McLean Co. Il. She married 27 Jul 1848 in Waynesville, DeWitt Co. IL, HENRY J JOHNSON, b. 28 Aug 1828 in McConnellsville, Morgan Co., OH The first 8 children of Sarah Jane and Henry J. Johnson were born in DeWitt Co. After the Civil War they moved to Bond Co. IL (about 60 mi east of St. Louis) where their 9th child (of 13) JENNIE JOHNSON was b 6 Jun 1867. You can follow those families back here: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&db=johnson_j_f&id=I118 One of those early Ohio Indian raids resulted in the killing of my fifth great grandfather JAMES KELLY and one of his sons. Another son was captured and not returned until General Anthony Wayne defeated the Indians in 1793. CLARINDA ELLINGTON, the great aunt of Catherine Hougham's husband David Ellington, was taken captive at Morgan Station KY and had three sons by her captor before being returned. http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?Clarinda::allington::13.html http://genforum.genealogy.com/allington/messages/15.html The story of Clarinda Allington is also related in the Draper Manuscripts. The manuscript provides an account of an attack on Morgan's Station that occurred April 1, 1793. In that account is the following: "Old Mrs. Allington, mother of Clarinda-who were both living at Morgan's Station and Clarinda's brothers, Johnathan and David, were living within a mile of the station--went along with the Martins as far as she could go, and when overcome with fatigue, laid down till night overtook her, and then made her way over to Peakes--after we'd all been to the stations. Old Mrs. Allington's husband's name I never knew. He was never in this country." CLARINDA ALLINGTON was captured by the Indians in that raid, but later returned home with three Indian children. Later in the same account, it states: "At Wayne's Treaty, they had to go and get him--Ben Becraft--and give him up. He came back with no Indian paint and he was nicely dressed, but soon got back to being a Becraft again. They could get no Indian at this treaty that could give any account of such a girl as Baker's daughter. All the others were then given up except Clarinda Allington and they said her husband would have to give her up--she was in the Cherokee Nation with him. She staid with the Indians 6 or 7 years till she had 3 children--John, a girl, and Mrs. Allington when she got permission to come and see her brothers, the Cherokee Chief sending a little negro boy of 16 or 17 along to take care of the children. She had promised to go back. She ever after refused to return; but left her children with Jacob--her brother--and gave hime the little negro boy to pay him for raising them: Jacob was him yet, I expect in Missouri. She again married, soon after she came out." This account was related by James Wade. According to him, the Johnathan Allingtons, Peter Cutrights, John Peakes, and Abraham Becraft moved to Morgan Station in February and March 1791. A Col. Whitley stated that Johnathan Allington later moved into Ohio on the Scioto. later note: The "Guide to the Draper Manuscripts" (editor Josephine L. Harper) includes an index to names, places, and events
