SKETCH of the FAMILY of JOHN NEWMAN - Written by Kathryn Hess of West Bountiful UT, Granddaughter of Rebecca Ellen Newman Ludington

John Newman, the eldest son of George and Barbara Hammond Newman was born 15 Dec 1819 in Franklin Co. PA. He moved with his family to Richland County OH then to Parke County IN. At 31 years of age we have the record of his marriage on 10 Feb 1842 to Nancy Hougham third child of Aaron Hougham and Mary (Polly) Parkhurst.
John and Nancy had four children: Sarah Catherine (Kate), Rebecca Ellen (Becky), Mary Elizabeth (Maggie) and Barbara (Barb).
This young family soon met with great sorrow in the untimely death of their mother and wife, Nancy on May 10, 1849. She is buried in the Linbarger Chapel Cemetery, Parke Co. IN. The following year John married Elizabeth Hougham, the youngest sister of Nancy, on 26 Jul 1850. Elizabeth was born March 1832. She was just 18 years of age. It was not long until Elizabeth was blessed with children of her own to care for as well as her dead sister's children; Jacob, Andrew Jackson, and Nancy Jane.
Soon after the marriage of John and Elizabeth and after the birth of three of their children and prior to April 1858, they had moved to Guthrie County IA. Their next child was Martha. The family is in the 1860 U.S. Census of Guthrie County IA and another son is born here, James Riley, b: 1 Mar 1861, murdered 26 Apr 1918 while walking in the desert in NV.
John Newman had had poor health for some time, diagnosed as lung disease, according to family tradition and was urged to go west to a dry climate. Their preparations to go west were probably made in 1862. The family had grown rapidly and it must have been of great concern to these parents to make such a move. One wonders if their destination was known through some contact with the west or were they starting on an adventure not knowing where their dream would end.
The family numbered six children with the parents making eight, which would certainly be more than one wagon could hold with comfort. The two older daughters would remain in IA. It must not have been a great hardship on Sarah Catherine as she already had plans for her marriage 30 Aug 1863 or perhaps the trip was planned so they might attend the wedding before their departure for the west. Rebecca was a young lady of 18 years, already teaching school and perhaps she too had her heart pledged to John Wesley Ludington, who she married after he returned from the Civil War. Rebecca was married 20 Aug 1865 in Adel IA, Dallas County.
Rebecca and Sarah Catherine never saw their father again. Sarah Catherine remained in IA and some of her family still reside in Earlham IA. Becky and John Ludington moved on to NE in a covered wagon in 1873, and settled in Lone Tree, Merrick County, then to Nance County and in later years lived at Fullerton NE. Rebecca gives her memoirs at 80 years of age in another history which is best told in her own words.
One cannot imagine the hardship of moving such a large family across part of IA, NE, WY, UT and most of NV. It must have been with wagon and team with most of the food secured along the way. Water must have been a critical problem as there is much desert. Their final destination was Dayton NV, Lyon County.
Dayton is an historical town, actually where the Comstock era had it's beginning. God was first discovered in NV in Dayton. It was the place the 49er's stopped after crossing the desert and became known as "Ponder and Rest", Hall's Station, River Rapids, China Town and finally Dayton. It grew to 2500 persons and as the ore ran out dwindled to 250 today. It is about 12 to 15 miles from Virginia City and also Carson City, and about 30 miles east of Lake Tahoe. The Newman's farmed and also ran the express or freight station. There last child was born there: John Done, b: 22 Sep 1863 and d: Mar 1884 probably unmarried. John Newman did not receive his expected improvement in health and on the 22 day of Oct 1868 he died an untimely death at 43 years, 10 months, 23 days. There must have been a sad struggle for this young wife and orphaned children, but Elizabeth must have been equal to the task as she continued to run the express office as well as doing her household tasks. In the 1875 census of Lyon Co., we find her brother, James Riley Hougham, age 40 in her household as well as her son, Andrew Jackson, age 22, and other children. James R. Hougham is listed as owning 630 acres and worth $1540. Barbara and Nancy Jane were married and in later life both moved to Fresno, raised their families and are buried there. Mary Elizabeth Carling died at 32 years and is buried in the family plot in Dayton. Andrew Jackson lived a long life, his residence is given as near Fort Churchill NV. Elizabeth lived 32 years after her husband's death and died in Dayton.

"FERNLEY BUTCHER FOUND MURDERED The body of James A. Newman of Fernley, who has been missing since April 26, was found Saturday in the sagebrush about 1500 feet from the Southern Pacific depot, with two bullet holes in his head. At a coroner's inquest held Sunday, a verdict was returned to the effect that Newman came to his death from the effects of a gunshot wound inflicted by a party or parties unknown. Newman was for a long time engaged in the butcher business in Fernley. He was an old vaquero and cowman and well known all over Nevada. Deceased has a brother, Andy Newman, a rancher in Smith Valley who took charge of the remains."
