    • Mary Josephine (born Mikesell) Aden Burton, passed away in Chicago, at home with her daughter and Scrabble┬« companion, Marilyn Aden (James Russell), by her side. Loving, energetic, positive, gracious, compassionate, warm, thoughtful and insightful are words friends and family immediately associate with Mary Jo. She touched lives and made lasting friendships wherever she lived. As the wife of Goodyear executive, Fred D. Aden (deceased), she lived in Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Italy where she learned to speak Spanish and Italian allowing her to comfortably entertain and assimilate.Fred and Mary Jo regularly returned to Coarsegold, California for summer visits. Their self-built cabin, Chuku-meka, was the site for family reunions of the extended Aden and Mikesell families where they basked on the warm boulders, found Indian arrow heads, and caught poison oak. After Fred's death, she settled briefly in Menlo Park, California near her sons, Fred Thomas (Donna Bachle) and Charles Melvin (Elizabeth Dickie). Her love of travel and ability to sustain long-term friendships connected her with a widower from her time in South America, Clark D. Burton. They were married in 1987 and moved to Smith Mountain Lake, Va. At the lake, MaryJo would swim from their peninsula across the lake while Clark would shield her with his motorboat. They continued to travel both near and far. They regularly visited both his children, Leslie McPhillips (Julian), Keith Burton (Debbie),Mark Burton (deceased), and Craig Burton (Sandra) and hers. Later, they moved to Brandon Oaks in Roanoke, Va. but she continued to have regular family reunions at the lake house until 2012.Her life spanned 93 years (January 14, 1921 October 12, 2014). She was the grand-daughter of Purdue University's first faculty member and Acting President, John S. Hougham and was the daughter of Hespera Hougham and Wilbur Beery Mikesell, a Professor at Cal State Fresno and businessman. She graduated from Redlands University where she met Fred Aden. Her brother, Alfred H. Mikesell predeceased her.In addition to being survived by her children, she was the proudgrandmother of Jennifer Aden, Michelle Meyer (Jason), Melissa Harmon (Ryan), Sean Russell, Michael Russell and Marshall Aden. Her great-grandchildren, Avery Meyer, Rylee Meyer, Amelie Harmon, Parker Russell and Aden Russell brought her immense joy.We miss her ready smile, willingness to play bridge on a moment's notice, generosity, alto voice and good company. No funeral is planned. A Memorial Service will take place sometime in the future. Donations to the Trinity Ecumenical Church at 40 Lakemount Dr., Moneta, VA 24212 are preferred instead of flowers.
