    • At St Mary Bredin is a vault for Mrs Sarah Shrubsole also for Mrs Hannah R Hougham and Henry Hougham of Barton Court

(NB St Marys Bredin was destroyed in 1942)

He married 2 months before father died

Possibly more than one child by sarah

Inherited Barton Court from father 1720

Freeman of the City of Canterbury 1722

In his will refers to a natural son "Michael"

Consistory Court Book 60 fol.181. The Will of this Henry Hougham has been the cause of much searching by descendants of Hougham,BUT,it does not give out much detail. viz. --"My wife Sarah is sole excrs--dated ? Mar 1725-6 In administration of this Will mention is made of MICHAEL HOUGHAM ,NATURAL SON of the deceased, and of Edmund Hougham,Agricola, and Solomon Hougham of Ickhamwood,shovelmaker"-YET-William Hougham THE ONLY SON inherits, Another clause in the Will of Henry says"Sarah, his wife to have the care and tuition OF ALL AND EVERY CHILDREN which I now have in my house "But no names are given.
Query?? Who are these chlldren?Who is Michael ,NATURAL son etc." — (of course I understand that son of my natural body" at one period of time .children born before marriage or out of wedlock were illegal-could not inherit, or even bear surname — previous to this period and later again, they became legal, if proven) they, NATURAL children are at times not born of legal wife , hence illegitimate. To trace this Michael will be of value to many branches of Houghams,I ,M. H. Pratt-am keenly interested.
Hasted' s Kent.vol.ll.p.238 ,St Mary Bredin. There is a vault for Mrs Sarah Shrubsole ,also for Mrs H.R.Hougham.and Henry Hougham esq. of Barton Court,
The word Barton means farm. Barton Court has a large brick dwelling, stables .gardens etc. and was a big estate, on the outskirt of City of Canterbury, at the foot of a small rolling hill on which the Church of St Martin's stands. In the 19th century Barton Court was cut into building sites and sold.
