Certificate of Registry of Birth: Jonathan Bartlett born 12th April 1897; registered entry No. 147 Register Book No. 176; 22 day of May 1897; St James Sub-District

Jonathan apprenticed to a printer but joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (Royal Naval Division) at Crystal Palace in December 1914. His service number was LZ 1039. After training at HQ in Blandford, Dorset, he was sent out to Gallipoli with Benbow Battalion in 1915 as a bugler/runner. He was transferred to Drake Battalion, was wounded or got sick (probably dysentery) and returned home to hospital. He rejoined the company in France in 1916 just 6 days after the battle of Ancre. Later he was in the battle for the Gavrelle mill. He had a crumpled bullet attached to a watch chain which he said gave him the scar on his left shin. He also had a scar on the back of his his head caused when a fellow on the step of the trench was shot. This made him throw his rifle back and down to the floor of the trench, resulting in Jonathan's skull fracture. I don't know where or when these injuries happened. He was in a Field Ambulance Unit with scabies when the war ended.

Apprenticed as sheetmetal worker/panel-beater and worked for a car body maker doing one-off bodies for Rolls-Royce etc. until he broke his hand playing soccer and lost the delicate touch needed. Then he worked as a gas meter maker/re-builder at Waltham Cross.

Married June 1927 to Gertrude Hurren. When they were first married they rented rooms in a house on Birkbeck Road Enfield. Moved to 70 Morley Hill abt. 1929.

During the Second War he was a sergeant instructor and AckAck gun layer in the Home Guard.

In 1946 he opened a guesthouse in Clacton.
