    Notes
    • Mentioned in fathers will

Arthur Hougham has Michael as son of Michael and Edith Austen and that Jane Brooke is his second wife.

Clearly there is a Michael in Thomas' will, I think Arthur is mistaken - RY

In the name of God amen. The last will and testament of Mychyell Huffam being weak in body but of good and perfect remberance thanks be to God , made this xx day of April in the year of our Lord 1599. First I bequeath my soul unto Almighty God in sure hope of my resurrection unto eternal salvation and my body to be buried in the churchyard at Stourmouth. I give unto Thomas my eldest son and to Henry Huffam my second son all my lands and tenements whatsoever lying within the xxx of yards and following unto their heirs forever and if either of them die before he shall come to the age of 21 years and without issue that then the survivor shall become the others heir. I give unto Richard my third son and to Michael my 4th son all my lands and tenements whatsoever lying and being within the precinct of Ash and Preston unto them and their heirs forever to be equally divided between them and if either of them die before 21 of age and without issue then the survivor shall become the others heir.

I give unto Elizabeth my wife the assign of all my lands and documents in form as following Viz. I give her the assigns of my eldest son his xxxx until he come to the age of 21 and of my personal savings until he is 23 of age and my 3rd and 4th sons their xxx until they are 21 provided that she at all times maintain the tenements and lands from the profits and bring up 3 of my children that is to say my 2 youngest daughters Mary and Agnes and my youngest son Michael till they are 21 of age and if Elizabeth my wife should die before that time then my oldest son Thomas to take overin same manner and terms and bring up Michael as appointed. I give my lease of lands as gift to be equally divided between my wife Elizabeth and sons Thomas and Michael provided that if Elizabeth marries my son Thomas shall have it solely and alone. I give my wife xxx pounds of lawful English money at the term of lease or if she marry within 8 weeks of marriage provided she and Thomas keep my 3rd son Richard 4 years at school out of their funds. I give unto my 2nd son Henry a cow of 2 years and a heifer of 2 years payable after my decease. I give unto my eldest daughter Elizabeth so much money as shall make her portion £50 of good and lawful money of England with already given her buy her grandmother Joade and other Joades, the one half to be given within 10 weeks the other half within 20 weeks of her marriage if she marry before she is 21 of age. I give unto my eldest daughter Elizabeth a cow and a calf of a year old at her marriage or at his decease. whichever first.

I give to my second daughter Mary Huffam xxx£s a week to be used for her best advantage presently after my decease. I give to my oldest son Thomas xx pounds good and lawful money of england and I give all the residue of my goods and chattels, notes and bonds equally to be divided between all my children Thomas Henry Richard Michael Huffam Mary and Agnes Huffam provided they pay my executors out of their heirs portions my sons at age 21 and my daughters at age 18. My executors I ordain to be Elizabeth my wife and my eldest son Thomas and my overseers William Willbourne and Andrew Joade.

Michael seals this his will by his mark in presence of Andrew Joade and Peter Joade.

MHP writes" The three preceeding wills ( this one, Michael "of Ash", Thomas, - RY) show plainly that there were two Michael Huffams in Ash each having his own one wife and parents, birth dates, marriages ,deaths, burial dates and places etc. Regs show the one b1569 and d 1659 was always spoken of as "of Ash" his whole short life of permanent residence - he names 1 son only in his will and numerous relatives and in laws servants etc.

Regs show the other Michael to be much older, a cousin of his father who resided at nearby Preston about 2 or 3 miles distant. There are two reasons why the marriage of this Michael and the first child Thomas were on Ash registers 1st, the Preston regs had been destroyed by fire all previous to 1658 2nd, Elizabeth Joads mother resided at Ash, the marriage being 1578 - the two Michaels were living and registered there. (in fact 3), but only Thomas of Michael and Elizabeth on bap reg 1579. The next, Henry and Elizabeth apparently bapt. Preston and regs burned. They are traced in marriage, 1 death and wills. The 3rd and 4th sons and all the other children are on Stourmouth regs 1 mile from Preston and in family wills - as well as their own wills identifying them.

One error follows another the historian left the four children out entirely after placing them wrong. The next publisher says "of the son Thomas", he was the last Huffam to hold an important church position in Ash.

Compare Planche p 394 with preceeding wills -study- note also Thomas was living in Stourmouth when 8 or 9 of age where he married was buried and had his inheritance and a family of 10 children( again 2 Thomases are mixed and misfit dates quoted. From here on discrepancies continue, compare Berrys ped. with heraldry, vivitations of Kent.

Then follows descendants of the 4 who were left stranded in that 1st error and historians attaching them to charts and pedigrees like a person hanging washing on a clothes line needing certain name name they drew from this growing surplus what appeared to fit best and without proof or reason filled in or attached. This is especially noticeable in a well named book titled "A forgotten Past " the entries and charts within it contradict themselves- It is valuable where wills are quoted correctly but even the wills of 2 Solomon Houghams are given to wrong persons. It is for this reason photostats of original wills was sought to obtain what extracts by disinterested paid researchers do not even see far less understand or reveal. It takes many family wills to disclose the ascent and descent of families. Each link must be proven and fit. There will be errors in the most carefully arranged - but better omit than guess, a lost link will be found easier than retracing numerous errors
      .

One more important statement here. The ref given for the 1st error was the " College of Arms" the most relaible of any. Inquiry there showed that a named person, not a herald, had been gathering much material for his son who was a herald and had put his case of MSS in the library for his own son. Someone had gone through this case for information and extracted from it genealogical material that had not been examined, proven, dated or signed officially- an inadvertant mistake and not really from the college but from loose notes in the public library there. The college herald very courteously and willingly investigated thoroughly and there are many letters on file covering the correspondence"
