Francis, bach, St Martin, Ludgate (page 27)

      Will dated 1722
Citizen painter stainer of London, Midd., England

Francis writes in a memoranda now in the British Museum " Anne Hougham (great Aunt) left my father William her executor and the estate to my younger brother Michael Hougham and in case he died it was to go to the next youngest of the children of William, which was I Francis only son left." " and by my last will I do give it to my son Jervase Hougham but I find that my father has mortgaged it for 99 years and it is impossible that it can come to me so I have made this MSS of it so that my son Jervase may have it not withstanding; I believe it is now (1717) about sixty years since that date. It lies in the parish of Ash; it is in the hands of Mr Wells a tenant."

He signs a statement in 1717 saying he is only remaining son of 8 and others have no issue

Francis Hougham the 7th son of William Hougham.and only SON TO HAVE ISSUE bore the ancient coat of Arms, and this branch retained the original spelling also of HOUGHAM—arms; "argent ,5 chevronels.sable." Records Office ,-London, document c7/181/109 april 1682 dealing, with Chancery proceedins of Francis Hougham, son of William Hougham ,who was an executor for Anne Hougham (his aunt) and a mortgage to Robinson.A footnote attached by Francis, Others mentioned are Osbert Hougham, Richard Hougham and Charles Hougham-brothers of Francis, From Planche "A Corner of Kent" reference to Hasteds collection -British museum ADD. MSS. 5, • 520 We find Williain ELDEST SON of Michael and Margaret Courthope ,had by his wife Susanna, daughter of John Clarke 15 children, 8 sons and seven daughters—that only Francis,Citizen and Painter Stainer.left issue.
He (Francis) married twice and had issue by both wives, Gervase whom he names in 1717 his heir was his child by his first wife.-Mary daughter and heir of Gervase Plumbe gent was born 13 June 1708. Nathaniel the only surviving son of his second wife was living in 1722, Nathanial proved his Mother s will in 1739.

Note(by M,H.Pratt) Above William is called "Eldest son", this shows that Michael Hougham and Margaret Courthope had more than one son-tho only "William is ever named by historians. This is an essential point. I find that Michael and Margaret had William and four daughters registered at. Ash,Then they evidently moved to Beakesbourne where another son, Michael and three more daughters are on registers.--so the statement "eldest son" was the clue for looking elsewhere for more children who were born after the Visitations of Kent were taken In 1619
Note also that it says Nathanial only son surviving BY SECOND WIFE--so historians have concluded that Gervase was dead--but the statement was referring to son of SECOND WIFE. I find that Gervase became the ancestor of a line of .Houghams named Huffman in America reaching from East to West and North to South.-through the son of Gervase who married Elenor

Mrs Higgins a descendant in American gives two children as of Francis, but they are children of Gervase and Elenor. Francis a son-b 6 Sept 1728 and
Jervis a son ,b 20 Oct. 1729- The emigrant ancestor of the American line, who two generations took spelling of Huffam
